Son of a tweet!

Interesting question. I've been tweeting for a few months now (only in networks of like minded professionals, not personally.) Under those circumstances, I don't see any foul language at all. (Hits Today: 789 Total: 789)

I think my interest in the idea of "foul-mouthed" tweets comes from my experiences in reading online newspapers, and the reader comments.

I've come to find that many comments are quick to judge each other and throw darts (or daggers if you will) at anyone who doesn't agree with their point of view. I've heard many folks comment about how uninhibited people are with their comments because online, with their alternate personas, avatars, profiles, etc... there's no re-course or consequence for any wrongdoing (legal or moral).

Has anyone else experienced this phenomenon?

But just because there is no consequence for "bad" behaviour, I still wonder, why do people tend to fall on the negative side of the conversation. Is it human nature to argue or disagree? Do we always need to prove we're right? Why?

As a school principal, the anonymity students feel (even though they aren't anonymous!) on Facebook or other on-line communication tools results in kids (and adults) saying things they would never say face to face.....hence, on-line bullying is prevalent. I often asked teachers to have a peer check their emails to parents, especially if they were upset...they too would say things that were inappropriate or downright mean! Hopefully the networks we are creating are friendly and professional!
